An Evidence-Based Approach to Academic and Professional Success in Meded

LAS Medical Coaching™ offers both short-term and long-term integrative academic and professional support services. All LAS Coaching begins with an Initial Consultation Process followed by weekly one-on-one coaching sessions with a dedicated LAS Coach.

LAS Coaching focuses on the process of learning, rather than simply the content. Our goal is to help clients develop sustainable, self-directed learning and performance skills that are applicable across academic, professional, and personal settings. Following the initial meeting, each client receives an individualized educational or professional development plan with learning objectives tailored to their unique goals, strengths, and challenges.

Using a relationship-based model informed by systems theory, education, and neuroscience research, LAS Coaching combines mastery learning and differentiated instruction with self-reflective strategies and data-informed progress monitoring. Through these processes, clients learn how to learn and achieve in measurable ways.

Traditional tutoring models for academic and professional support often assume that difficulties stem primarily from knowledge deficits. And while addressing knowledge gaps can be important, this deficit-based model does not fully explain why capable and knowledgeable individuals continue to struggle academically or professionally. That’s why we believe that intellectual ability alone is rarely sufficient for academic and professional success.

At LAS, we have found that while many clients possess a strong foundation of knowledge, they have not developed the skills necessary to effectively learn, retain, recall, and apply that knowledge. Consequently, the academic and professional challenges they experience are often related to difficulties with executive functioning, self-regulation, communication, and performance, rather than a lack of intelligence, motivation, or effort.

For this reason, LAS Coaching begins with a comprehensive Initial Consultation Process. We take the time to understand each client’s story, history, goals, prior experiences, and current challenges. This process allows us to identify underlying barriers to success and develop individualized learning objectives and support strategies that align with each client’s unique needs. Through one-on-one coaching, students and residents learn to deepen their knowledge, strengthen their higher-order thinking skills, and learn more efficiently and accurately in adaptive ways, for long-term academic and professional success. The result not only improves immediate performance, but also builds the skills, habits, and self-awareness necessary for long-term success.
